Unfortunately, I can’t post the graphic here, but click here and you can find it.  I chose to keep the numbers because there are so many locations in each category and what they take continues to be so varied.  There are many grocery stores that only take plastic shopping bags, but don’t take aluminum cans, for instance.

I really wanted to play up the comaraderie that occurs in this chapter.  I was really struck by how these people could not do it on their own, they needed the other immigrants to help them survive.  They needed the citizens to finally turn nice and give them food.  It gave them faith that not everyone is bad.  Not everyone was against them trying to find a better life. By playing up the community element of immigration, it shows the people that do this and how diverse they are, as well as what they have in common. I chose the typography of the headline font because it’s big and bold, which shows that this is a serious topic. This story is not something that can be taken lightly, it’s not fun and games, its life and death. But the kerning is also really small, which brings to light the tension that the immigrants feel, as well as representing how close the come as they are trying to survive. I chose Enrique’s quote on the second page because it gets the point of the camaraderie across perfectly.

This graphic was a project that ran in The Columbia Missourian that I did recently with Alex Goff.  Both of us are in the Information Graphics class.

We decided to do a feature on pumpkins because we think that pumpkins are the best part of Halloween and the fall.  Also, the Hartsburg Pumpkin Festival was coming up.  We chose to make pumpkin anatomy dominant because its not the most well known aspect of a pumpkin, but is still some fun trivia to know.  We made green the background color for the color bar because it is also a fall color and the color of pumpkin leaves and vines.  The fonts are Missourian style.

I decided to use a three-column grid because I felt that it helped to tell the stories best.  It allows for the stories to interconnect, which is important because they all relate to the idea of “Honoring Oops.”  “Honoring Oops” is about getting beyond the exact moment that a social faux paus was committed, such as Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift, and learning more about the background of the story, such as learning about Bob Fosse.  I added a story about Bob Fosse because he served as the inspiration for the music video that started it all and knowing about him helped to provide context for the video.  I think most people have probably seen Beyonce’s music video, and I know that learning about Bob Fosse really added to my understanding of the music video.  Placing a cut-out of JaQuel Knight in between columns made him more important, because the story is about him, not Kanye and Taylor.  I chose the fingerprint font used for bylines and the department title because “oops” moments are very personal things and unique to the situation and people involved, much like fingerprints.  The people writing the stories also have a great deal of influence on our understanding of the “oops” moments, so we see their fingerprints all over the stories.  I chose the display font because its childish enough to convey that these moments aren’t the most serious moments, but not so childish that they can’t be taken seriously.  The font also reminded me of the font used for “Where the Wild Things Are,” which I felt fit the page because both the movie and “oops” moments are about temporarily escaping social norms, though they both have different consequences.
